School Transitions
Transition – Kindergarten to Foundation
At Sunbury Heights we have processes and programs in place that have been widely recognised as giving preschool students the best start. We want the transition to primary school to be supportive, not only for pre-school children but also for their families.
Some of the ways we aim to ensure that our prospective students and families are prepared for school are by providing the following:
-
- Playgroups
- Kindergarten buddy visits
- Kinder at school days
- Prep transition afternoons and whole day school visits
- Home visits
- Parent forums about learning
- Buddies
- Meet and Greet sessions
- Open evenings
Please contact the school on 9744 3377 for more information about enrolling students at Sunbury Heights. Tours of our school can also be arranged.
Transitioning from Year 6 to Year 7
We are fortunate in Sunbury to have two excellent state secondary schools to choose between and I would encourage all parents to take the time to attend the open nights and tours that are available. To help you through the transition process, your first point of call is your child’s classroom teacher. They will happily assist you with any queries and keep you informed about the processes and procedures to be followed.
In response to feedback from previous students about the challenges of being well organized at secondary school, Year 6 students are allocated a locker during Term 4. In line with the expectations at secondary schools, they are required to collect their books and equipment for the next block periods and go to the room where their next subject will be taught. This provides repeated opportunities for students to develop and improve their organizational skills within a familiar environment.
Year 6 to 7 Placement
Secondary schools may include the following information on their school website to inform parents and carers about school zones and the statewide Year 6 to 7 placement timeline.
Our School Zone
Our school zone is available on findmyschool.vic.gov.au which hosts the most up-to-date information on school zones in Victoria.
Students residing within our school zone are guaranteed a place at our school, which is determined based on your permanent residential address.
Our school manages enrolments using the Placement Policy to ensure that students have access to their designated neighbourhood school and may enrol at another school, if there are available places.
For more information about our school zone, please contact our school. For answers to frequently asked questions about school zones and enrolling in Victorian government schools, visit the Department of Education’s School Zones page.
Year 7 Enrolments
The Department of Education has a statewide Year 6 to 7 placement timeline.
Victorian government primary schools manage the placement of their Year 6 students in accordance with the timeline.
At the start of Term 2, primary schools will distribute information packs to parents and carers.
You can find more information about applying for Year 7 placement at: Moving from primary to secondary school.
